We are currently recruiting for an IT Solutions Design Specialist, based in Kilbirnie Street, Glasgow.

Hours

Full time, Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5pm

Flexible working is available with this role.

About the role

The role will focus on the detailed strategy, design and development of infrastructure solutions at Arnold Clark across network, unified communications, data centre and cloud platforms.

Reporting directly to the Head of Networks and Platform Engineering, you will have full responsibility for the technical solutions proposed and will retain that responsibility throughout the full lifecycle of the business. The Solutions Design Specialist will be expected to have a broad knowledge across a wide range of IT technology, including operating systems, security, converged and hyperconverged server platforms, virtualisation technology, cloud delivery platforms, management platforms, storage technologies, WAN and LAN networks, load balancing, clustering and data centre infrastructure. An understanding of how new and existing technologies can and should host applications across a multi-cloud platform is expected as part of this role.

Day-to-day duties

  • Delivering and embedding a ‘security by design’ approach to everything we do.
  • Involvement in initial engagements to articulate the capabilities of the business and help shape technical strategy and requirements with your colleagues in application development.
  • Owning the full technical solution required to meet business requirements and liaising proactively with infrastructure and development teams and external partners as necessary, to deliver technically elegant, feasible and commercially viable solutions that enables the Arnold Clark digital vision.
  • Owning and managing the risks associated with solution development and implementation.
  • Undertaking, where required, authorship and/or review of technical elements of proposal documentation.
  • Supporting the Head of Platform Engineering in the presentation of technical solutions to IT senior management and the wider technology teams.
  • Providing technical support in contract negotiations and development.
  • Ensuring the effective handover of technical solutions.
  • Contributing to the development of the business' technical solutions and capabilities, keeping abreast of industry developments and proposing innovation.

Essential skills

  • Broad overall infrastructure background with proven experience in technology and methodology.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of infrastructure-related services and solutions, including virtualisation, storage, networking design, end user workstation delivery, multi-cloud management and hyperconverged infrastructure platforms.
  • 5+ years within a senior infrastructure role.
  • Experience of managing teams.
  • Proven experience working with application engineering teams from an infrastructure perspective.
  • Current and up-to-date technical accreditations in your specialist field.
  • The ability to integrate, contribute or lead technical solution discussions in several strategic meetings or workshops and then drive forward agreed actions and designs.
  • An innovative approach to delivering and managing solutions that would enhance the retail experience for the customer.
  • Both a broad and 'technical management' understanding of technology, applications and IT issues, standards and processes.
  • A good understanding of cloud and virtual solutions including equipment, services, security and capabilities.
  • Proven ability to work in collaborative projects and demonstrate the ability to undertake a technical leadership role.
  • Good use of cost control techniques.
  • Negotiating skills for internal and external meetings.
  • A basic understanding of the ITIL service management process and, in particular, service level agreements.
  • The ability to articulate technical solutions to senior business stakeholders.
  • Experience in designing customer-facing solutions.
  • Effective design and proposal documentation skills.
  • Experience of a broad range of technologies.

Nice to have (but not essential)

  • Knowledge of Cisco platforms such as UCS, Hyperflex and Call Manager.
  • Knowledge of HP infrastructure platforms.
  • Ability to deliver and design solutions to host and manage a microservices application landscape.
  • DevOps experience.
